| Welcome
As we welcome the swimmers back from Camp, the sun has finally come out - lets hope this is a sign that Spring has finally arrived. A big thank you to Fiona, David, Lana, Tom and Judith Allison for giving up their time and looking after the swimmers for the week. Thank you also to the parents who ferried folk back and forth. Look out for a report in the next newsletter to find out what they got up to at Newcastleton.
I'd also like to extend a warm welcome to Janette Bell and Malcolm Dow who have kindly agreed to join us on the Management Committee. Most of you will know Malcolm as Claire and Logan's dad and will have seen him at poolside. He has taken over the management of internal competitions from Keith so you'll probably see Malcolm pinning the latest results onto the notice board at Leith Victoria. Janette has been associated with the Club for a long time with her three children, Allan, Steven and Gillian, having previously having swum at Inverleith and her husband, Chris, is the Prep Group coach. She is also involved with East District competitions, is a timekeeper and recorder, and has taken over the role of Club Treasurer.
There's always room for new folk to join the Committee, so if you're interested, please come and have a chat with me.
Thanks
Kathy

Pool-side helpers
Congratulations to the following parents who gave up eight hours of their time recently to complete an Introductory CPD course based around the same syllabus as the old poolside helpers course. They all receive a CPD certificate for their efforts and are now qualified to assist the coaches during training sessions.
Well done to: Alan Hamilton, Gillian Alexander, Helen Mander, Hilary Alexander, Karen Bell, Keith Skakle, Jess Duncan, Leanne Reid and Susan Whitham.
Early morning training
Many thanks to Lana who has kindly given up her sleep on Tuesday mornings to take an Advance Group session at Leith Victoria when doors open at 6.00am. Now into its fourth week, its great to see so many of the swimmers making the commitment to train at this time of the day and then again the same evening. Hopefully all the hard work will pay off at competitions. There are still a couple of places for any Advanced swimmers wishing to train in the morning. Please speak to Lana in the first instance if you are interested.
Land training sessions
Lana will also be starting land training sessions for Advanced swimmers. These sessions will start on Sunday 7th April in the hall at Leith Victoria and will run every Sunday from 5.30 - 6.30pm. Priority will be given to those competing regularly but anyone else wishing to take part, please see Lana first.
Congratulations
A big congratulations to Faye Fulton for coming 2nd in the Scottish Junior Squash Nationals which took place at Heriot-Watt on the 2-3 Feb 2013. Well done Faye!
We previously reported that Ross Borwick was selected for the Scottish National Ice Hockey team. He is playing in a tournament in Paris this week and we wish him the best of luck.

| Competition reports
East District Age Group Championships
We sent a large group of swimmers to the East District Age Group Championships held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool on the 2nd and 3rd February 2013. This was the first time many of them had swum in a long course competition and everyone produced great swims and lots of PBs.
On the Saturday morning, Claire Dow and Sophie Hamilton both swam well in the 100Fly. The boys then took on the 100B/C with Joe Penman, Fraser Allison and Jonah Walsh all competing well in their heats and setting PBs as did Claire Dow, Ailsa Inglis, Sophie Hamilton and Eve Lovell in their 100F/C races. In the last heats of the morning session, Fraser Allison and Jonah Walsh swam PBs in the 100B/R.
Fraser Allison returned for the afternoon session to swim the 200 IM and did extremely well to secure a place in the final where he came a very credible 8th.
After a successful Saturday, Sunday brought more of the same. First up, Fraser Allison, Jonah Walsh and Joe Penman took on the 100F/C and all swam cracking PBs against an extremely strong field. The girls then competed in the 100B/C with Claire Dow, Emily Mander, Sofia McCorkindale and Eve Lovell all doing well with some great PBs too. Claire Dow, Sophie Hamilton and Eloise Walker were back in the pool for the 100B/R, with Claire achieving a great PB and Sophie booking a place in the final with a fantastic swim that was also within the consideration time for the Scottish National Age Group Championships.
Claire Dow was the only swimmer in the afternoon session and again smashed her PB in the 200 IM.
Later in the evening, Sophie flew through the 100B/R final with another great swim just short of the time she set in the heats to finish in 6th place.
Congratulations to everyone who took part, a very successful weekend with all your hard work paying off. A special well done to Sophie Hamilton on achieving an entry time for the Scottish National Age Group Championships in April.
East District Time Trials
The East District Time Trials held on the 17th February at the Royal Commonwealth Pool was a short-notice arrangement to enable swimmers a final opportunity to gain entry times for the upcoming Scottish National Age Group Championships in April.
Three of our swimmers Claire Dow, Sophie Hamilton and Fraser Allison entered and competed extremely well. Fraser knocked two seconds off his PB set two weeks previously in the 100 B/R and was just short of the consideration time, Claire also narrowly missed out on the consideration time in the 100 F/C despite swimming a fantastic time of 1:05:37.
With only a short rest, the girls took to the 100Fly - Sophie knocked three seconds off her PB to achieve her second entry time for the Scottish Championships while Claire just missed out on a PB. Fraser and Claire completed their swims in the 200 IM and both achieved great times.
Well done guys - you should all be very proud of yourselves, I definitely am!
Lana
Lothian Leagues Rd 1
The first of three rounds of the Lothian Leagues took place at Prestonpans on Saturday 9th March.
We had seven teams entered, one each for the 10/11 Boys & Girls, 12/13 Boys, 14&O Boys & girls and two teams in the 12/13 Girls. Unfortunately, due to call offs, we did not have a full team in the boys 14&O, so could not field a relay team.
The younger swimmers swam their events in the morning and every single swim produced a PB which was fantastic. We also had some great relay swimming.
Individual places are as follows:
3rd: John Mander – 50B/C
4th: Aryan Singh – 100 IM
Lily McCorkindale – 50B/C
6th: Fraser Allan – 200F/C
Charlotte Drainer – 50BR
At the moment I have not heard what position we are in.
The older swimmers swam in the afternoon and again we had loads of PBs. Those who did not swim PBs were only just outside their times. We also had swims, from Claire Dow & Fraser Allison, that were too fast. This competition is time-banded and swimmers are penalised if they swim faster than the set time band. We were nevertheless delighted with these swims as Claire and Fraser both achieved good PBs for their swims.
Individual places are as follows:
1st: Jonah Walsh – 100B/C
Sophie Hamilton – 100B/R
2nd: Kieran Wilson – 200 IM
Sophie Hamilton – 100FLY
3rd: Joe Penman – 200F/C
Ross Crawford – 100B/C
Kieran Wilson – 100BR
Boys 12/13 – Freestyle Relay
(Joe Penman, Ross Borwick, Jonah Walsh, Fraser Allison)
4th: Ross Crawford – 200F/C
Kerrie Walker – 100BR
5th: Ailsa Inglis – 100B/C
Gregor Devine – 100FLY
6th: Ross Borwick – 100FLY
Again we are not sure where the teams are lying overall but well done everyone, some great swimming.
Fiona

Correction
In the last newsletter, it was reported that Angus Skakle came 5th in the 50FLY at the Lothian Region Graded Meet. He in fact came away with a silver medal - apologies and well done Angus!
